Platforms in the e-commerce market and the relevance of ever faster delivery

The recent years have seen immense growth in e-commerce, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Besides big players like Amazon, numerous startups in the field have emerged and tried to bundle sellers' demands for managing logistical operations. While online shopping comes with the benefits of often lower prices and the convenience of buying from home, instant gratification and the experience of physical stores remains an advantage of stationary retail. For this reason, the issue of faster deliveries and same-day shipping gained importance. While firms such as McKinsey recognized a major trend, implementation has shown that the hoped-for benefits cannot be realized for every company and every market, as certain conditions must be met.
